Living in Accordance with the Seasons

Spring is a time of rebirth: calves and lambs are being born, baby chicks have arrived to be raised for the freezer, the grass is bursting into life, the gardens are being planted in anticipation of a bountiful harvest and the fruit tress are cautiously opening their blossoms to be pollinated just to name a few signs of this rebirth. This is the time of year when you feel that you just can’t keep up to everything.
A steady routine of daily activities signals summer. We have settled into a routine of daily animal moving, keeping on top of the weeding, gathering firewood and mowing the lawn.
All of a sudden fall is upon us and that feeling of overwhelm settles back in for a while as we are busy harvesting the meat animals and gardens that will sustain us through the coming season. Preparations, not only for ourselves, but also for the animals for the winter must be made now.
Then comes winter; a time to be able to breath a little easier. Everything on the farm is now in maintenance mode. We no longer have baby animals. All the animals are feed and checked daily, but we find ourselves in doors much more. This is the time to reflect back on the prior seasons; a time to analyze what went well and what needs to be changed in the seasons ahead.
